DESCRIPTION
The $2,500 award of excellence will be awarded to a student of the violin, viola, cello, or bass enrolled as a full-time student in one of Montreal’s four universities (Concordia University, McGill University, Université de Montréal or Université du Québec à Montréal), all cycles or the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal, third, fourth, and fifth cycles. The applicant must be 25 years old or less on May 1, 2012.
The scholarship will be awarded to a student whose artistic excellence has been recognized by the jury following a blind audition process of a recent sound recording submitted by the applicant and who has received a recommendation from his or her instrument teacher.
The application deadline is May 1, 2012; only duly completed applications will be considered.
Documents to accompany the application
- A complete and up-to-date curriculum vitae;
- A copy of your birth certificate or certificate of Canadian citizenship or a proof of permanent resident status;
- Proof of the applicant's status as a full-time student enrolled in a classical music program at one of Montreal's four universities or the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal;
- A letter of reference from the applicant's instrument teacher at the establishment where he or she is enrolled as a full-time student;
- A brief description (200 words) of your career development goals;
- A detailed list of the repertoire submitted for consideration, including the composer, duration (in minutes and seconds) and publisher of each piece;
- A recent sound recording (on CD only) of the submitted repertoire. Recordings must be solo or with piano accompaniment only.

A bit of history...
The Peter Mendell Award was established at the initiative of his family and many of his friends. The annual award was formally launched at a private event held in honour of Mr. Mendell, at which the proceeds were donated to the JMC Foundation. A highly respected lawyer, Peter Mendell is also a passionate music lover of classical music, an amateur cellist and he collaborates with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra Chorus. Mr. Mendell also sits on the Board of Directors of other benevolent organizations.
